Our lives were torn apart when we tragically lost our son, Zamar, to gun violence. The sentence handed down to his shooter was not enough. Our story is personal, but it is not unique. Each year, thousands of families across the U.S. bear the unbearable pain of losing loved ones - a pain that is exacerbated by the leniency of our current justice system. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the average length of sentences for violent crimes, including murder, is less than 20 years. This is not justice. We are therefore calling on our lawmakers to propose a bill for stricter minimum mandatory sentencing in cases of violent crimes. We must ensure the punishment truly reflects the severity of the crime, for Zamar, and for all other victims of violent crimes. Please stand with us.
